A.1  Earth, Atmospheric and Space Science and Technology

Outline

This master course is integrated in the research activities of the Évora Geophysics Centre (CGE), a research center of the University of Évora, with unique infrastructures in the areas of specialization of the course, including a network of weather stations in the region of Évora; an observatory of Atmospheric Physics equipped with modern instrumentation that allows for monitoring the atmospheric environment; spectroradiometric instrumentation developed at the CGE; a laboratory of precision optics for development and calibration of environmental instrumentation; Varied geophysical instrumentation, including several seismic stations; a platform for atmospheric observation at Cabo da Roca (near Lisbon); an Environmental Geochemistry laboratory equipped for preparing and analyzing metals, nutrients and other chemical elements in different geological matrices.

This MSc course provides advanced knowledge in four areas of specialization (branches) on the three subsystems Earth, Atmosphere and Space and in the technologies and methodologies of observation, monitoring and modeling of these subsystems, with particular concern for several environmental aspects.

The course aims to prepare students to acquire the ability to systematically understand a particular field of earth, atmospheric and space science and technologies, while giving a cross-training in these areas, to provide an integrated and high level education. For this purpose, this Master course provides the students with the skills, aptitudes and research methods that assure the ability to conceive, design, adapt and conduct a scientific research project of high level, according to the internationally accepted parameters of quality and innovation.

Dissertation

The students will have the opportunity to develop their thesis in experimental environment, using state-of-the-art instrumentation, laboratories and models in the fields covered by the course.

A.2  Informatics Engineering

Outline

The Informatics Engineering master offers an advanced training in the different information tecnology areas, as well as some specific technology skills, and the ability to adapt to a variety of new situations, including technological developments and paradigm shifts.

Students have eight required disciplines in areas such as Management, Software, Databases, Distributed Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Interfaces in order to ensure cross training in complementary areas to those that they already have taken in their 1st cycle or equivalent Computer Science. In four option courses and in the dissertation students can opt for training in a specific area of Information Technology.

The acquired skills should give the students the ability to perform research activities in the field of IT, application development and projects and project management  in the field of informatics engineering.

B     PhD courses

B.1  Biochemistry

Outline

This program intends to contribute to the strengthening and consolidation of scientific research structure, through the advanced training in Biochemistry, to prepare researchers endowed with a high sense of ethics, integrity and scientific rigor, highly prepared to design, implement and evaluate scientific research projects, independently.

The program is developed in three years, has a total of 180 ECTS, 60 of which correspond to the doctoral program and the remaining 120 ECTS for the preparation of doctoral thesis.To complement the biochemical basic training in the 1st semester, students must attend elective courses, totaling 15 ECTS. In the unit Advanced Topics in Biochemistry, students must attend to workshops on subjects within the specialization of this course, organized by the Course Commission, Departments of ECT or research centers, either from the UÉ or from other institutions. Each student must present a report on the scientific content.

Furthermore, there are three units of Biochemistry Research. Students will be integrated into research teams and develop a small individual working project, based on solving a specific problem within the research carried out by the housing teams. In these units, students will develop research and/or attend to short courses on scientific subjects and the experimental methodologies used in their project. Besides, they will develop some experimental work and the results should be useful to solve specific problems. At the end, a report will be prepared for public presentation and discussion. In the unit Thesis I, under the supervision of their doctoral supervisor, students will plan their research project, in order to prepare the doctoral thesis. This project will include theme, goals, state of the art, methodologies and timetable, which will be presented and defended by

the student. With a total of 120 ECTS, the thesis program will continue, occupying almost the entire 2nd and 3rd years of the course. Moreover, in the 2nd and 3rd years of the program, with the disciplines of Complementary Activities to the Thesis (I and II), students will complement their training, by attending to advanced courses or conferences, held by national and international experts; organizing seminars to disseminate the results of their work; participating in scientific meetings with presentation of papers or collaborating in teaching activities in their area of specialization, among other possible related activities.

Outline

The PhD degree in Informatics (computer science) at Universidade de Évora focuses on fundamental and applied research in several topics of Informatics, including, among others: Artificial Intelligence, Formal Languages, Constraint and Logic Programming, Concurrency and Parallelism, Natural Language, Machine-Learning based techniques, Human/Machine Interfaces.

Students will work in close cooperation with researchers and Professors which carry out their work in the scope of research projects and recognized research centers, such as LISP, INESC-ID and CENTRIA.
